چکیده

Gas exchange in the avian embryo has been shown to be dependent on, and limited by, the diffusive properties of gases across the resistance offered by the shell and shell membranes ( Wangensteen and Rahn 1970-71). For simplicity, we shall use the term “shell’ to denote the entire barrier to diffusion between the interior of the egg and the environment. It has also been shown that under normal conditions the diffusion of water vapor across the egg shell approximates the diffusion equations set forth for ideal gases (Paganelli et al. 1971) and that the weight loss in eggs is almost entirely due to diffusion of water through the shell (Romanoff and Romanoff 1949). The diffusive rate of water loss from eggs is:

Conductance and Structure of Eggs of Adelie Penguins, Pygoscelis Adeliae, and Its Implications for Incubation’

Structure and conductance of eggshells of Adelie Penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, were studied to address the question: How is the eggshell adapted to cope with the extreme aridity of the Antarctic, and in particular, what is the significance and function of the organic cuticle on the eggshell? Adelie Penguin shell structure has a basic avian pattern with relatively straight, unbranched pores that...

The Avian Egg: Surface Area, Volume, and Density

The surface area of the avian egg through which the developing embryo must exchange heat, metabolic gases, and water vapor is a variable of prime importance for quantitation of the permeability of the egg shell to these substances. Surface-area measurements are necessary if one is to compare the permeability properties of shells ranging in size from less than 0.5 g in hummingbirds, to 1.5 kg in...

I-19: Surrogate Egg Shell Culture for The Analysis of Avian Stem Cell Fate

Background: The chick embryo is a classical model to study embryonic development. However, most researchers have not studied the effect of embryonic manipulation on chick hatchability. To determine the effect of egg orientation and type of sealing film on the hatchability of cultured embryos, and to determine the fate of adulte stem cells injected into the blastoderm. Materials and Methods: Win...

A review of the relationship between eggshell colour and water vapour conductance

This review brings together the available literature that examines the effect of variations in pigmentation on the water vapour conductance of avian eggshells. Pheasant and Houbara bustard eggs provide some evidence that shell abnormalities can impact upon colour and water vapour conductance. By contrast, data from wild birds suggest that neither the degree of maculation or intensity of backgro...
